According to the Bund Naturschutz (Bavarian Environment and Conservation Association), up to 300,000 urban trees have been felled in Bavaria alone in the last ten years. The reasons for this are varied: diseases caused by urban influences such as exhaust fumes, sealed soils, road salt and dog urine, but also new roads and construction projects. Although cities plant replacement trees, these cannot replace the ecosystem services such as CO₂ storage and cooling performance, and more.
